Muscular Atrophy

Muscular atrophy is a collective term for various rare neurological disorders. It mainly arises either from abnormalities in central nervous system or from the muscles themselves lacking key proteins, leading to a gradual loss of muscle function. Patients progressively experience muscle weakness, twitching, tremors, degeneration, and wasting. In severe cases, difficulties with swallowing, weak coughing, and declining respiratory function may occur, directly threatening life. Although patients may suffer from widespread muscle weakness and even lose the ability to speak, they usually remain fully aware of their condition and muscle status.

As of 2025, Hong Kong has no official statistics on the exact number of muscular atrophy patients. According to the latest estimates by neurologists, there are over 10,000 patients locally. Because the patient population is relatively small, this group is easily overlooked by society.

The Challenges Faced by Patients and Families

As patients gradually lose physical strength, mobility, and self-care ability, caregiving responsibilities mostly fall on family members. In 2025, despite advances in medical technology, home-based therapy, domestic assistance, and nursing services remain severely inadequate in Hong Kong, failing to effectively ease the burden on families.

When the illness worsens, patients may need ventilators to sustain life or feeding tubes for nutrition. At this stage, family members must frequently perform suction and pat phlegm to keep airways clear, and regularly clean feeding tubes and tracheostomy sites. Even simple meals can take more than two hours. These heavy caregiving duties place enormous physical and emotional strain on caregivers.

For patients who are physically weak but medically stable, Hong Kong still lacks specialized nursing home services. Many are forced to stay at home under family care until their condition suddenly deteriorates, at which point they are rushed to hospital. Unfortunately, this often means missing the best treatment window, and cases of delayed rescue are not uncommon. Thus, while families endure immense pressure, patients’ quality of life is also difficult to safeguard.

Update Notes

  • Data Update: The estimate of “over 10,000 patients” is retained, but is now emphasized as the “latest estimate”, implying that it may be adjusted over time.
  • Current Situation: The content mentions advancements in medical technology, yet home care services remain inadequate, which aligns with realistic developmental possibilities.

If you would like to further adjust the content—such as adding specific policies, statistical data, or updates on certain types of muscular dystrophy/atrophy (e.g., ALS, DMD)—please let me know and I will make further revisions!
